detox soup.

this is a soup from the book “FRENCH WOMEN DON’T GET FAT” by mireille guiliano.  here’s her website ~

although the title might be a little off-putting, the book really isn’t.  there are a lot of great tips and recipes ~ even a scarf-tying section!

she has a weekend detox plan, where you eat leek broth 1/2 cup at a time, then a light piece of grilled fish and some veggies for dinner.  for a whole weekend.  and by monday, you’re reset.  i’ve tried it and it’s HARD.  mainly because the leek soup does a number on a fragile system like mine.  but also because i have no discipline.

the hardest thing about detox is the fact that when you go on a detox, you clearly have come from some imbalanced living.  so your body is hungrier than ever, sugared out more than ever, and some habits have been set in stone.  so eating the leek soup all day is bad enough, but coming from rich restaurant foods and wine makes it 10 times harder.

so mireille has an alternative that is just a little bit easier.  she calls it MIMOSA SOUP.  it’s a little heartier than the leek broth and makes you feel like you’ve eaten something.

as usual, i’ve changed it up a bit ~

detox “mimosa” soup this is a “drop in the pot and cover with water” soup.  no technique necessary.  if you are going to blend it, don’t worry about chopping into small pieces.  but i need some chunks of food so i feel like i’m eating something.  otherwise, i go postal and reach for the munchies.


  • 2 turnips
  • 4 stalks celery
  • 1 potato, peeled
  • 4 leeks
  • 2 carrots
  • 1/2 a head of cauliflower
  • add kale or lettuce or spinach if you’d like!

chop and drop everything except the cauliflower into a pan.  cover with veggie stock, or water and bring to a boil.  add salt and pepper to taste.  turn down and let simmer uncovered for 40 minutes.  add the cauliflower and simmer for another 15 minutes.

you can now blend this soup, or leave it as is.  i do something in between ~ i blend just a cup of the veggies to make the whole soup a little creamier.

  • add fresh dill and parsley, and more fresh cracked black pepper.

the potato really helps me through this detox. so i added that, and the dill and the broth.  mireille says to add boiled chopped eggs over top, for protein.  i’ve never tried that, but whatever works for you.

i’m also drinking lots of water spiked with cayenne pepper, lemon and honey, with this detox.  and decaf green tea.  my body is screaming ~ “where’s the wine?  where are the cream sauces and the steak?”  it’s pretty confused, but hopefully i can focus and muscle through!
