DAY 1: distractions.

Good morning! And happy Lent! Oh wait…that’s not right. This is supposed to be a solemn time.

Okay, well happy Wednesday!

And happy 1st day of no sugar!

This is just a tiny little Pixy-reminder to eat a healthy breakfast!

I’ll just leave this bright, cheery plate right here…

Those are eggs fried in just a touch of coconut oil, two handfuls of organic baby spinach sautéed for just a minute in the same pan with the leftover coconut oil, and some sliced strawberries. All sprinkled with kosher salt and fresh cracked black pepper.

It took about 3 minutes, and the prep dirtied up only a grill pan, spatula and a knife.

Which is about all I had clean in my kitchen to start with. I made chili and chocolate chip cookies for 20 men last night. My kitchen looks like a FALLUJAH.

(Too soon?)

Here’s my 20-quart stock pot full of chili!

SO GOOD!

BACK TO BREAKFAST.

If you are doing this no-sugar-for-Lent thing with me, this is a great way to start your day! (Not the chili ~ the eggs!) The protein and richness of the eggs really sustain, the sautéed spinach is maybe the healthiest thing you could ever do for yourself, plus it’s delicious, and the strawberries give that bit of sweet you might be missing these next few days of detox. And everything has the flavor and fat of the glorious coconut oil (my favorite coconut oil is sold at Costco).

I don’t crave sweets during the day, because I drink wine at night. I find that most people do one or the other. If you like wine, you usually don’t care about dessert as much. If I do both at a special night out, I ususally end up on my deathbed after.

I’m a real fun date.

Either way ~ when you start feeling those cravings, I hope you’ll have your DISTRACTIONS on-hand!

What’s a DISTRACTION, you ask?

DISTRACTION: Definition ~ A food, drink or pastime to distract you while you are jones-ing for those break-time M&M’s.

I’ve started a JAR OF PASTIME DISTRACTIONS.  I’m filling a big container with pieces of paper listing some of my favorite things to do, to remind myself that there are lots of other ways to enjoy my life. I have so many interests, and sometimes I forget they even exist, especially when I’m looking into the window of a pastry shop, with my nose pressed against the glass. Not a good look. Move on, Pixy. Move on.

Here are some things I’m going to add to my JAR OF DISTRACTIONS!

1. BUBBLE BATH!!!!   Is there anything better?

2. GO TO THE LIBRARY. The library near me is a beautiful, peaceful space. My Dad always used to go to the library and read the paper on Monday nights. I love that idea.

3. WATCH AN OLD CLASSIC MOVIE. The cure for a need for sweet is always an Audrey Hepburn movie.

4. THE MUSEUM. We have one of the most beautiful museums in the world, and I live less than 10 minutes from it. Just the Impressionism wing alone can cure what ails you.

5. IKEA. Just…IKEA. Nothing else you need to know.

Anyway, you get the idea…

Here’s my JAR OF DISTRACTIONS!

Well, I guess it’s technically a pitcher, but isn’t it pretty? This should distract me for a good long while.

And as far as the food and drink distractions? That’s what I’m here for! I’ve got some beautiful recipe ideas and will get right on those. Posts coming soon!
